Decembe 9, 2008From CBC News
On a November flight in the year 2007 from Thailand to Los Angeles, two women were convicted of smuggling charges. Gypsy Lawson is twenty five years old and was accompanied by her fifty five year old mother Fran Orgen, while she was trying to smuggle a monkey over the United States border. Gypsy put the monkey under her blouse “pretending she was pregnant”. The monkey was very calm so it was possible for them to hide it under the woman’s blouse. They both got the hidden monkey across the United States Custom in Los Angeles successfully. Concerning this fact, there seems to be a need to improve the security on airports. No one found out of even suspected that the woman was not actually pregnant and so the daughter and the mother both got out of the airport successfully. This is very strange knowing that a monkey is not that small and it the airport security didn’t find out about it. After their safe return to Los Angeles, Gypsy told a clerk in a clothing store about her monkey. Whether it was the clerk himself or someone else that heard the story, Gypsy and her mother were arrested and convicted of smuggling charges. The monkey was taken away and is now “at a private rescue facility” in Oregon. As for the two women, their sentencing will be held on March 3 of 2009.
